Update on NHSP Bill Progress
As you will be aware, there has been little progress with the Bill now that the election has passed. We have therefore taken the following action:
• I recently met with Ministry officials who advised that the Minister, while having indicated that it is something he has put into his programme for the current term, has asked his officials to come back to him with a fuller brief and a recommended way forward, including cost benefit analysis.
• Requests have also been made for meetings with the Minister and the Prime Minister (my local MP) which have been turned down so far.
• We have engaged our existing lobbyist, Roger Sowry to work more intensively on our part.
It is vital that the Bill passes into law as soon as possible because it will support further industry growth by providing consumers with a higher level of assurance that products are safe, approved, effective and true-to-label. We have therefore urged Ministry officials, and will be urging the Minister, to deal with it sooner rather than later given the time already lost on this piece of legislation that is so important to us – and New Zealand’s economy.
At this stage we anticipate that Ministry officials will be presenting an update at the Summit but I will let you know if there are any significant developments before then.

Use of “Member of NPNZ Logo
Over the last few months the board of NPNZ has been discussing a structure and protocols to enable members to use a “Member of” NPNZ logo in specific circumstances.

Fish Oil Publicity
It was very unfortunate that there was a slow news week when this was released by the Liggins Institute. Our public relations committee decided to handle it by focussing on using it as an opportunity to promote the passing of the NHSP Bill rather than to make a technical response at the time. However, further work is being carried out by others including the Omega-3 Centre in Australia and when those results are completed we will publicise them.
